Pine Needle Basket Making Classes to be offered ! .
Melanie will be offering several pine needle basket making classes during the first three months in 2010, offering three different basket making experiences.
Classes will be held on Saturday afternoons from 1 pm to 5 pm at the RDG Glass Blowing Center located at 612 Castle Street, Wilmington, NC. (910-772-2090). Each month the same class will be offered two times, so you can choose the better date(s) for you to attend. All supplies are included. Students are asked to bring an old towel to use as a work surface, and scissors to cut thread. Participants will need to be able to see well enough to thread a needle and distinguish individual stitches.
Students will walk away with one finished basket from each class

THE SCHEDULE
January 16
Walnut Rice Bowl
Learn the basics to pine needle basket construction.
This includes starting a basket from a center, forming
the bottom and side walls, as well as learn how to finish
the basket.January 30

Coasters and Trivets
Learn how to make pine needle coasters and trivets using
many natural materials as embellishment.

Cracker Basket
Learn how to start a basket from pine needles (without a
center start) , create the oval and oblong shape, and make a
handle from one continuous coil.March 27

During each class, in addition to learning how to make coiled baskets, students will also learn how to locate and select specific pine needles, prepare them for use, as well as how to seal the finished basket. Skills learned can be used to make many baskets in the future.
